Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about Kotatabi.
What is Kotatabi?
Kotatabi is a gamified language learning app that uses spaced repetition to help you remember vocabulary long-term. It supports Japanese, Spanish and English, with AI-built flashcard decks, daily streaks, XP, coins and weekly leagues.
How do AI-built decks work?
Describe what you want to learn (e.g. "Japanese food vocabulary" or "Spanish travel phrases") and the AI generates a complete flashcard deck with words, readings, example sentences and audio. You can edit any card after generation.
Is Kotatabi free?
Yes. Kotatabi is free to use with no ads. You can create decks, review cards, earn XP and compete in leagues without paying. Premium cosmetic items (themes, avatar frames) are available for purchase with coins earned through studying.
How is it different from Anki?
Anki is powerful but complex. Kotatabi is simpler, with a cleaner interface, built-in gamification (streaks, XP, leagues) and social features. The spaced repetition engine is similar, but Kotatabi handles scheduling automatically so you don't need to configure anything. Think of it as Anki with a better default experience.
How does spaced repetition work?
Your brain forgets information at a predictable rate, called the forgetting curve. Spaced repetition interrupts this by showing you each word just before you'd forget it. Over time, the intervals get longer as the memory strengthens. This is the most evidence-backed technique for moving vocabulary into long-term memory.
What languages do you support?
Currently Kotatabi supports Japanese, Spanish and English. We're working on adding more languages based on community demand.
Can I import cards from Anki?
Yes. Kotatabi supports importing Anki decks (.apkg files). Your card data, including scheduling information, will be preserved during the import.
How do streaks work?
A streak counts the number of consecutive days you've reviewed at least one card. If you miss a day, the streak resets. Streak freezes (available in the shop) can protect your streak for one missed day. The daily goal feature helps you know exactly how many cards to review each day.
What are weekly leagues?
Every week, you're placed in a league with other learners who have similar XP. The top performers promote to a higher league the following week, while the bottom performers demote. Leagues run from Monday to Sunday and reset automatically.
Is my data private?
Yes. We only collect the data needed to run the app (your email, learning progress and account settings). We never sell your data to third parties. See our privacy policy for full details.
